West Ward School Student Interviewees

The West Ward School Oral History Project was conceived by historians Robert Wall, Dr. Wesley Arden Dick and Leslie Keller Dick to interview, transcribe, and archive the authentic voices of students who attended historic West Ward School in the years just preceding its closing in 1953.  Beginning in the winter of 2015, twenty-two participants were interviewed by Robert Wall and videotaped by Leslie Keller Dick. The students were mostly the children of laborers who arrived in Albion, Michigan from the South beginning in the winter of 1916, and continued to move north throughout the first half of the 20th Century to work in the iron foundries that surrounded the school.  Here we are sharing the full unedited interviews that were done at Albion’s Local History Room from January 2015 through August 2015.
